Basic Computer Buying Guide
 
Purchasing a home or business computer can be a confusing and sometimes costly decision. Read on for a listing of helpful suggestions for what to look for and ask when purchasing a new home or business computer.

How do you plan to use your new computer?

* Internet; Browsing, email and chat.
* Playing games
* Listening to music or watching movies
* Work related; Spreadsheet, word processing, database, etc.
* Shopping: EBay

Do you plan to connect to the internet?

Will you connect to the internet with dial-up or broadband (cable or ADSL)? Dial-up internet is slow and uses a device called MODEM. A modem connects to your phone line. Cable or ADSL falls under the broadband category. It supports very fast downloads. Websites open quickly.

What type of screen (Monitor) do you prefer?

* Flat LCD
* CRT (standard tube monitor)

High quality, smooth graphics.

Most computers come with a standard graphics controller or processor. If you plan on playing arcade style computer games or edit photos then you could consider a high quality Graphics Card.

What about sound?

The standard option is usually a set of stereo speakers if you plan to listen to music. If you plan to watch DVD movies on your computer then you could consider a 5.1 Speaker system. 5.1 Speakers means 5 speakers and a sub woofer much like a standard home theatre setup. Some computer games now provide surround sound environment.

Smooth operation

Computer Memory (RAM) is an important consideration when buying a computer. More memory means more efficient and a smoother operation. More memory also helps your computer reduce the time spent switching between programs.

What about the processor?

The Processor or CPU is an important consideration when buying your new computer. The processor is like the brain or the engine that powers the programs and controls the hardware. The Faster the processor the quicker your programs will run but this speed also comes at a price.

Will you need a printer?

* Print photos - colour printers
* Print work documents - laser printers

Also, consider 'combo' printers, which include an inbuilt Fax machine. These combo printers also come with photo print capability and / or laser print quality. ASK Questions.
When buying a computer remember to ask questions about what you are getting in the pack. Here are some questions you could ask next time you go shopping:

* Are all computer parts covered by warranty?
* Are the parts installed new or second hand?
* How long is the warranty period?
* Do you have to pick up your computer from the seller or can it be delivered to your home or office.
* Can the seller provide setup and on-site support or will you have to pay extra?
* Does the total price include the operating system like Windows XP
* Are you buying Legal software?
* Will the seller custom build the computer or will it be 'off the shelf'?

ASK Questions

It is important that you understand what you are buying. Ask questions. If the seller does not have time to answer all your questions then you might want to proceed with caution.
